U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced that he has successfully added language to the final Continuing Resolution for 2011 that requires NASA to fully develop its heavy lift capability. Through this addition, Senator Shelby has saved hundreds of jobs at Marshall Space Flight Center. Senator Shelby made the following statement on the importance of the inclusion of this language:
“Without the development of rockets with heavy-lift capability, humans will not be able to explore space any further than they can with the Shuttle today. The ability of NASA to achieve our goals for future space exploration has always been and always will be through Marshall Space Flight Center.”
Marshall Space Flight Center’s integral role in developing this new heavy-lift capability will solidify Huntsville’s leadership role in NASA’s human exploration efforts. The inclusion of the heavy-lift language represents a crucial step forward for innovation and for the future of our space program.
