SHELBY ANNOUNCES NOMINEES TO U.S. SERVICE ACADEMIES FROM THE WIREGRASS AREA

Students from the Wiregrass area have been Nominated

WASHINGTON, D. C. --- U. S. Sen. Richard C. Shelby (R-Ala.) today applauded several Wiregrass area students who were nominated to the United States Service Academies. The service academies include the U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Military Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

Senator Shelby said, “Furthering one’s education at our nation’s service academies is remarkable. These students have shown exemplary performance in the classroom and in their extracurricular activities. The selection process for the academies is extremely competitive, and I was pleased to have been able to nominate a number of students from the Wiregrass area.”

Service academy nominees must be residents of Alabama and must complete the required ACT and SAT exams. Applicants are also required to provide letters of recommendation, their school transcript, completed medical examination, and the required application form.

The following Wiregrass area students have been nominated:

 

  • Leandro Fugate, son of Gary and Fatina Fugate of Enterprise, and a student at the United States Air Force Preparatory School, has been nominated to the United States Air Force Academy.

     

  • Matthew Canales-Grooms, son of Clinton and Lydia Grooms of Daleville, and a student at Daleville High School, has been nominated to the United States Military Academy.

     

  • Jessica Ciluffo, daughter of Scott Ciluffo and Pamela McArdle of Dothan, and a student at Northview High School, has been nominated to the United States Military Academy.

     

  • Kathryn Erker, daughter of Erich and Michele Erker of Enterprise, and a student at Enterprise High School, has been nominated to the United States Military Academy.

     

  • Daniel Whitehurst, son of Cecil and Ruby Whitehurst of Ashford, and a student at Ashford High School, has been nominated to the United States Military Academy.

     

  • Joseph Ferguson, son of Wayne and Karen Ferguson of Dothan, and a student at Northview High School, has been nominated to the United States Military Academy.

Although Senator Shelby nominated these students, the academy to which they were nominated will make the final selection.
