SEN. SHELBY ANNOUNCES APPROVAL FOR CSS ALABAMA PRESERVATION

WASHINGTON, DC --- U. S. Sen. Richard C. Shelby (R-Ala.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced today approval of the conference report for Fiscal Year 2002 funding for the CSS Alabama. Sen. Shelby said, "I am very pleased the Conference Committee approved funding for this important project."

Sen. Shelby said, "I am pleased that one of our nation's most historic warships will be preserved. Specifically, the Committee appropriated $12.9 million for the Pentagon's Legacy Program. This will permit continued efforts to salvage artifacts from the sunken Civil War Raider C.S.S. Alabama. Mobile continues to hold a strong appreciation for its rich American and uniquely Southern Heritage."
