WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) today was joined by the Honorable R.D. James, Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works, for an official tour of the Alabama State Port Authority’s Port of Mobile. They were accompanied by Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson; Colonel James DeLapp, Commander and District Engineer of Mobile; Horace Horn, Chairman of the Alabama State Port Authority Board of Directors; and Jimmy Lyons, Director of the Alabama State Port Authority, who assisted in leading the visit and delivered an update on current developments at the Port.
“Today I enjoyed touring the Port of Mobile with Assistant Secretary R.D. James,” said Senator Shelby. “Mobile’s port is one of the fastest growing container terminals in the nation. I am confident that it can continue on that path, eventually becoming one of the top harbors in the southeast. Highlighting potential development opportunities for the Administration is critical for the Port’s growth and subsequent impact on the state and region.”
Earlier this month, Assistant Secretary James testified during the Energy and Water Development Appropriations Subcommittee hearing to review the Fiscal Year 2019 budget request for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. During the hearing, Senator Shelby discussed his interest in the deepening and widening of the Port of Mobile and the economic growth that it could drive in the southeast.
The Port of Mobile provides access to nearly 15,000 miles of inland waterways serving the Great Lakes, Ohio, upper Mississippi, and Tennessee Valley ports. It is the tenth largest seaport in the nation and has been identified as the fastest growing container terminal in North America. In any given year, between 52 to 67 million tons of cargo move through the harbor.
