Senate Approves FY 2006 Foreign Operations Appropriations Bill

WASHINGTON, DC -- U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced Senate approval of the University of South Alabama's Ukrainian Birth Defects Monitoring Program. This program will now be eligible for funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The Foreign Operations Appropriations bill, which passed the Senate by a vote of 98 to 1, will now go to a conference committee with the House for consideration.

Senator Shelby said, “I am very pleased that the Senate has again recognized the importance of this program and has shown continued support for the work of the Ukrainian Birth Defects Monitoring Program at the University of South Alabama. The program will continue its studies of environmental causes of birth defects in the Ukraine, while also working to implement a nationwide birth defects prevention program.”
