SHELBY ANNOUNCES APPROVAL OF UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA’S BIRTH DEFECTS MONITORING PROGRAM

Senate Passes Consolidated Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2004

WASHINGTON, DC --- U. S. Sen. Richard C. Shelby (R-Ala.) today announced full Senate approval of the University of South Alabama's Birth Defects Monitoring Program. This program will now be eligible for funding by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Senator Shelby was instrumental in securing this funding, which was included in the Consolidated Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2004.

Sen. Shelby said, "I am very pleased that the Senate has again recognized the importance of this program and has shown continued support for the work of the Birth Defects Monitoring Program at the University of South Alabama. The program will continue its studies of environmental causes of birth defects in the Ukraine. In addition to the important research conducted at this facility, the facility employs numerous Mobile-area residents."
