SHELBY ANNOUNCES APPROVAL OF UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA’S BIRTH DEFECTS MONITORING PROGRAM

Senate Passes FY 2005 Foreign Operations Appropriations Bill

U. S. Sen. Richard C. Shelby (R-Ala.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced Senate approval of the University of South Alabama's Birth Defects Monitoring Program. This program will now be eligible for funding by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The FY 2005 Foreign Operations Appropriations Bill will now go to a conference committee with the House of Representatives.

Sen. Shelby said, "I am very pleased that the Senate has again recognized the importance of this program and supports the work of the Birth Defects Monitoring Program at the University of South Alabama. This program is nearing conclusion and the language in this bill supports the orderly termination of this investigation of environmental causes of birth defects in the Ukraine."
