U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), ranking member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice and Science, today announced that the Department of Justice will award $357,739 to the Alabama Department of Corrections. This grant is awarded through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program, which provides funding for law enforcement agencies to implement programs that prevent and control crime based on their own identified needs. Senator Shelby was instrumental in securing this funding.
“It is essential that we provide our local law enforcement officers with tools that will help them with their jobs,” said Shelby. “The Alabama Department of Corrections will use this funding to enhance security and training tools that will aid in the recruitment and retention of new correctional officers. This funding will also be used to aid emergency response teams with planning for crisis response and training.”
