SHELBY COMMENDS DECLARATION TO ADJUST COST SHARE FOLLOWING HURRICANE IVAN

President Announces Federal Government will Cover 90% in Disaster Assistance

WASHINGTON, D. C. -- U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today commended the announcement today by President George W. Bush to amend the disaster declaration following Hurricane Ivan.

Specifically, President Bush amended the disaster declaration to authorize 90% federal funding for all categories of assistance under the Public Assistance Program. This will be retroactive to the date of declaration, which was September 15, 2004.

Senator Shelby said, “In most disaster situations, the federal government will cover 75% of the cost, leaving the remaining up to state and localities to pay. I am pleased that the federal government’s share has increased to 90%, easing the burden of localities, who have already seen great financial strain as a result of Hurricane Ivan.”
