U.S. Senator Richard Shelby, a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today made the following statement regarding the exclusion of a provision in the final conference report of the Fiscal Year 2009 Emergency Supplemental Appropriations bill that prohibited the release of detainee photographs.
“There is virtual consensus among national security experts, including those within the Obama administration, that the release of these photographs would endanger our troops and our nation's security by inciting hatred within the international community. I cannot support a bill that strips a provision that would help protect our men and women in uniform. This is a reckless, politically motivated step.”
