Shelby Applauds U.S. Supreme Court’s Decision to Uphold Previous Water War Ruling

U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) today applauded the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision not to hear an appeal from State of Georgia regarding use of water from Lake Lanier.

“The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision reiterates what I have always stated: Lake Lanier was never intended to be metro Atlanta’s water supply,” said Shelby.  “While I believe a negotiated outcome is the best and likely only solution, this may be a turning point in this ongoing dispute.  I will continue my work to ensure that Alabama receives its fair share of the water allocation until we reach a compromise that is equitable to those of us downstream.”

On February 5, 2008, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia ruled that the 2003 deal between Georgia and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers over the use of water in Lake Lanier is invalid.
