SHELBY ANNOUNCES FUNDING FOR CSS ALABAMA PRESERVATION

U. S. Sen. Richard C. Shelby (R-Ala.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced today conference committee approval of the Department of Defense Appropriations Bill for Fiscal Year 2003 and funding for the CSS Alabama and LST 325 preservation projects.

Sen. Shelby said, "I am pleased that two of our nation's most historic warships will be preserved. Specifically, the Committee approved $8.4 million for the Pentagon's Legacy Program, with $600,000 to be used specifically for the CSS Alabama project. This will permit continued efforts to salvage artifacts from the sunken Civil War Raider CSS Alabama. The conference committee also approved the LST 325 project in the Legacy program portion of the report. This will allow the project to compete with similar projects for available funding with which to restore the LST 325. Mobile continues to hold a strong appreciation for its rich American and uniquely Southern Heritage."
