Shelby Discusses Possibility of F-35 Site Selection in Montgomery

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, today questioned Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson and Chief of Staff David Goldfein on the FY18 funding request for the Air Force.

Senator Shelby highlighted the Air Force’s recent visit to the 187th Fighter Wing of the Alabama National Guard in Montgomery and advocated for its selection to be a home for the new F-35 fighter jet program.

Earlier this month, Senator Shelby led the Alabama delegation in writing Secretary Wilson a letter to express appreciation for the Air Force’s visit to Dannelly Field and consideration of the Alabama site. In the letter, the members emphasized the excellent strategic location and community support in Montgomery, and cited the low cost of bringing the F-35 to Alabama. The letter also mentioned the 187th Fight Wing’s superior training, operations capabilities, and rich combat history.
