Shelby Announces Critical Defense Funding for South Alabama

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced final passage of the Fiscal Year 2017 Department of Defense Appropriations bill, which contains critical funding important to south Alabama. Following today’s action by the Senate, the bill will go to the President’s desk for his signature.

“This bill strengthens our nation’s security with an increase in defense spending,” said Senator Shelby. “Supporting top defense priorities, including Alabama’s national defense capabilities, demonstrates that we are committed to our military. I’m pleased that our state will continue to play a leading role in serving our Armed Forces. With growing instability around the world, we must provide our military the means necessary to protect our nation.”

Littoral Combat Ship/Fast Frigate (LCS/FF) program – Includes $475 Million for three ships, adding one more than the President’s FY17 Request

“The Navy has called this ship a lethal, necessary, and versatile component of our fleet,” said Senator Shelby. “Congress must work to ensure that our naval capabilities are superior and that our Armed Forces receive the equipment they need to execute future operations. President Trump has made our nation’s defense a top priority, and that includes the Littoral Combat Ship and its ability to fill critical warfighting gaps for our Navy. The funding secured in this bill is great news for national security, the warfighter, and south Alabama.”
