U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala) today welcomed the United States Army Security Assistance Command (USASAC) to Redstone Arsenal. The USASAC, which is relocating to Redstone Arsenal from Ft. Belvoir as part of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) recommendations, is responsible for executing the nation’s security assistance mission in the transfer of defense articles and services and military training from the U.S. to foreign countries through the Foreign Military Sales Program. As part of the Army Materiel Command, USASAC is responsible for managing $49 billion worth of work with foreign countries.
As a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Senator Shelby has been instrumental in securing funding for the new USASAC building. The Fiscal Year 2009 Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies Appropriations bill included $98 million for the USASAC building.
“I am pleased to welcome USASAC to Redstone Arsenal,” said Shelby. “As the focal point for Foreign Military Sales, USASAC plays a critical role in promoting military relationships with our allies around the world. Additionally, USASAC ensures proper security assistance and the execution of foreign policy objectives for our Army. The relocation of the command headquarters to Redstone Arsenal is a tremendous gain for Huntsville and our state.”
