U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced that the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has awarded a $1.9 million healthcare/nursing initiative to Northwest-Shoals Community College for the Shoals Nursing Transitions Program.
“The United States is in the midst of a nursing shortage, making it essential to increase the training, educational opportunities, and the recruiting of nurses,” said Shelby. “This important grant will help Northwest Shoals Community College expand its nursing program by providing critical funding to grow its current programs and upgrade classrooms and laboratories.”
The DOL’s Community Based Job Training Initiative is a competitive grant program through which proposals are chosen from a nationwide pool. This year the Initiative received nearly 400 applications for this program and selected only 69 winners. Over three years, Northwest-Shoals Community College is expected to enroll 90 high school students in pilot Certified Nursing Assistants programs and 60 students in Licensed Practical Nurses programs.
