U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), ranking member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice and Science, today announced that the Department of Justice will award $4,769,000 to the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs to assist victims of crimes.
“It is terrible to be a victim of a crime,” said Shelby. “These funds will give victims and their families access to important services such as counseling, shelter, legal and medical assistance to help them recover after a crime has been committed against them.”
This grant provides funds from the FY 2007 Crimes Victims Fund to enhance state victim compensation payments to eligible crime victims. The Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) assistance funds are competitively awarded by the state of Alabama to local, community-based organizations that provide direct services to crime victims.
