Shelby Announces $388,000 for University of Alabama Transit System

U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced that Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration has awarded $388,000 to the University of Alabama for the University's transit system. Senator Shelby was instrumental in securing this funding.

“The University of Alabama Transit System will provide a full scale, intermodal system for the transport of individuals around campus and in the surrounding Tuscaloosa community,” said Shelby .  “The system will enhance safety and decrease congestion on campus, while also meeting the needs of this growing college community.”

This funding and matching University funds will allow the school to:

  • Add park and ride lots to the perimeter of campus
  • Construct a transit office and primary bus transfer station at the Campus Drive parking deck
  • Eliminate parking spaces on the inner core of campus to provide passenger loading areas
  • Eliminate certain street parking spaces and construct transit lanes
  • Improve the sidewalk system
  • Construct passenger shelters and transfer stations
  • Re-pave dedicated transit bus lanes
  • Widen turn lanes and modify curbs for transit vehicles
  • Eliminate sight distance hazards for bus safety
