INVESTIGATION OF SEPTEMBER 11TH TERRORIST ATTACKS
STATEMENT OF SENATOR RICHARD SHELBY

"I am hopeful this investigation will be bipartisan and bicameral. After the events of September 11, the American people deserve nothing less than a vigorous, thorough and credible inquiry."

"I have been in Congress for 23 years. I believe this investigation will be the most important undertaking of my career."

"Some have claimed there was no intelligence failure on September 11. I believe the murder of nearly 3,000 Americans strongly suggests otherwise. Our purpose is to explain to the American people why the Intelligence Community failed to warn us of the September 11th attacks and to identify and correct the deficiencies which led to that failure."

"Over fifty years ago we were caught completely off guard when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. We created our intelligence bureaucracies to make sure we were never surprised again. Tragically, we were on September 11th. It is now our duty to help prevent a third Pearl Harbor."
