Senate passes Military Construction Conference Report

U.S. Senator Richard C. Shelby (R-AL), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced Senate approval of the conference report to accompany H.R. 4837, the Military Construction Appropriations Act for fiscal year 2005. This legislation will now be sent to the President, which he is expected to sign into law. Included in the bill at the request of Senator Shelby is significant military funding for Alabama and for Redstone Arsenal.

“I am pleased that the Senate approved this important legislation,” said Shelby. “This funding is essential to the continued improvement of Redstone Arsenal, and it represents our commitment to national security and to the men and women who serve our country.”

$19.56 million - Phase II Construction of the Von Braun Complex

Included in the bill is $19.56 million for construction of Phase II of the Von Braun Complex for the Missile Defense Agency. These funds will provide for initial design-build construction of a secure, consolidated administration and operations center to support 969 personnel assigned to MDA's GMD-JPO, the Missile Defense Data Center (MDDC), the Optical Discrimination Analysis Offices (ODA) and direct support contractor personnel.

$590,000 for construction improvements for Family Housing Privatization

Senator Shelby said, “I am pleased these funds have been included to improve housing and quality of life for our military families on Redstone Arsenal.”

In total, $98 million for Alabama Military Construction projects was included in the Military Construction Appropriations Act for fiscal year 2005.
