SHELBY COMMENDS SUPREME COURT NOMINEE

WASHINGTON, D. C. -- U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL) made the following statement upon learning of President Bush’s nominee to the United States Supreme Court:

“I am extremely pleased with President Bush’s nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to the United States Supreme Court. Judge Alito has a long and distinguished career of public service, serving our country in a number of positions over the last twenty-nine years, including his most recent tenure on the Third Circuit Court of Appeals.”

“As we move forward, I intend to carefully review his judicial philosophy and qualifications for this important position. I was pleased with the civility in which Judge Roberts' nomination was considered. I am hopeful that Judge Alito is afforded the same respect, and that the Senate will operate in a fair manner and give him an up-or-down vote," Shelby added.
