U. S. Sen. Richard C. Shelby (R-Ala.) announced today that the Senate Appropriations Committee has approved funding for the Department of Defense Appropriations Bill for Fiscal Year 2003 and funding for Anniston defense programs.
Sen. Shelby said, "I am very pleased that the committee approved funding for these important Anniston defense-related programs. They are critical to the stability of our nation's military infrastructure and readiness. Today's approval demonstrates our commitment to national security."
Senator Shelby said, "I am very pleased the committee has agreed to include $10 million for the Calhoun County Commission to improve schools, roads, bridges, law enforcement and fire services equipment. I continue to be concerned with the Army's commitment to emergency preparedness at the Anniston Army Depot, and, as the start date for operations draws near, I remain committed to working to ensure that every safety measure has been addressed to protect the Anniston and surrounding communities before this facility becomes operational."
M113 FOV UPGRADE PROGRAM
Senator Shelby said, "This bill includes $39.4 million for additional vehicle upgrades to the M113 Carrier and track production. This tracked vehicle continues to be one of the workhorses of the U.S. Army. It is a priority for the Army, for me and for my constituents. The work will be completed in the Anniston area."
M1 ABRAMS TANK
Senator Shelby said, "This bill includes a total of $376 million for the Abrams Upgrade Program and M1 Abrams Tank Mods. This funding represents the Army's strong commitment to recapitalization and modernization of our legacy forces. The M1 Abrams tank has been and continues to be the most lethal ground combat system in existence anywhere. It is the backbone of our heavy forces and has been at the core of the work done at the Anniston Army Depot for many years."
HYDRA 70 ROCKETS
Senator Shelby said, "This bill includes $62.4 million for procurement of Hydra 70 Rockets. This weapon gives the Army a critical capability. The rockets are produced in the Anniston area."
INTERIM ARMORED VEHICLE (IAV) FAMILY
Senator Shelby said, "This bill includes $788 million for procurement of Interim Armored Family of Vehicles. Anniston Army Depot plays a significant role in this program. Stryker production in Anniston continues to gain momentum. The IAV program is a critical part of the Army's Transformation effort, and I am pleased that Anniston is helping to lead the Army into the future."
