Shelby, Casey Place Friendly Wager On Alabama vs. Penn State Football Game

U.S. Senators Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) and Robert Casey, Jr. (D-Penn.) today announced a friendly wager on the outcome of the University of Alabama vs. Penn State football game, which is scheduled to kickoff at 6 p.m. CDT this coming Saturday in Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
Senator Shelby wagered a whole smoked turkey from Bates Turkey Farm in Fort Deposit, Alabama, that the Crimson Tide would bring home the win.  Senator Casey wagered ice cream from Penn State’s Berkey Creamery.  Shelby and Casey issued the following statements on the wager and the game:

“The University of Alabama and Penn State have two storied programs with a rivalry forged by historic moments in college football,” said Shelby.  “Chief among them, the Goal Line Stand has become entrenched in Alabama lore and remembered in pictures on the walls of restaurants and living rooms across the state.  The Crimson Tide faithful are well-acquainted with Coach Joe Paterno and, through these contests, have developed a deep respect for the competitive spirit and class that he has brought to the game. I know that Coach Saban will have the Crimson Tide prepared to compete with intensity and integrity in this tremendous matchup.  I look forward to supporting our student-athletes as they welcome Coach Paterno and the Nittany Lions to the newly expanded Bryant-Denny stadium.”

"It’s going to feel like Thanksgiving has come early when I get to enjoy that smoked turkey in celebration of Penn State’s big win this weekend,” said Senator Casey.  “With the duel rushing threat of Evan Royster and Stephfon Green and the ever tenacious defense of Linebacker U all under the direction of the legendary coach Joe Paterno, the Nittany Lions will have no problem knocking off the defending national champions in the prime-time lights of Bryant-Denny Stadium."

Shelby holds an undergraduate and law degree from the University of Alabama.
