U.S. Senator Richard C. Shelby (R-AL) today announced that the City of Haleyville will receive $600,000 for the their downtown revitalization project. Senator Shelby, Chairman of the Senate Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee, secured this funding in the Omnibus Appropriations bill for Fiscal Year 2003.

In November of 2001, an F-2 tornado struck Haleyville, and a major portion of the downtown area was destroyed. Additionally, the current downtown shopping area faces serious safety concerns because of poor lighting and structural deterioration. This funding will be used to removed the concrete shopping mall, reopen the streets, construct new sidewalks, and add lighting and landscaping.

“I’m pleased to announce these funds for the City of Haleyville. As they rebound from the terrible tornado that struck their community in November, 2001, Haleyville is working hard to revitalize their downtown area. I hope this funding will assist them in their efforts,” Senator Shelby said.

It is expected that construction will begin in August of 2003 and be completed by May of 2004.
