SHELBY ANNOUNCES $480 MILLION IN FUNDING FOR DELTA REGIONAL TRANSPORTATION DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

The Senate has adopted an amendment authored by U. S. Senator Richard C. Shelby to establish the Delta Regional Transportation Program during debate of S. 1072, the Highway Authorization bill. The Senate passed this legislation by a vote of 72 to 21.

The Delta Regional Transportation Program will provide federal funds for transportation infrastructure development in Delta Regional Authority designated counties. The amendment authorizes a total of $480 million to the program over a six year period, including $80 million for each fiscal year from 2004 through 2009.

Sen. Shelby said, “The link between the transportation infrastructure and economic development is unmistakable. Establishing a transportation program specifically for the Delta Region is a crucial step towards promoting economic development, raising the standard of living, and improving quality of life in this traditionally impoverished region.”

“I will work to ensure that funding for this program is included in the final version of this bill.”
