SHELBY ANNOUNCES FUNDING FOR RAILROAD SAFETY ENHANCEMENTS IN ALABAMA

U.S. Senator Richard C. Shelby today announced that the Federal Railroad Adminstration has awarded Alabama $300,000 to enhance the safety of public and private highway-grade crossings along federally-designated high-speed rail corridors.

“I am pleased that we were able to secure this important funding to improve the safety of our railroads. It is imperative that we continue to make our state’s transportation safer, and this funding goes directly toward improving the areas where railroads cross over roads and busy streets. I applaud the Federal Railroad Administration for approving this grant for Alabama’s railroads,” Sen. Shelby said.

This funding will include a number of hazard elimination activities: crossing closure, crossing consolidation or grade separation; installation or upgrade of automated warning devices to include bells, flashing lights and/or gates; improvements to track circuitry, crossing surface upgrades, crossing sight distances or illumination; installation of advanced train control or traffic control systems; and other relation project development and engineering activities.
