Appropriations Committee Passes Transportation Appropriations Bill
Sen. Shelby said, "I am pleased that the bill provides significant funding for several Huntsville and North Alabama projects. These funds reflect our commitment to safe and efficient transportation and infrastructure."
Sen. Shelby added, "I am pleased that we were able to include a significant increase in highway funding for the State of Alabama. Alabama will receive an estimated $610 million in highway funds for Fiscal Year 2004, which represents an increase of $54.4 million from last year’s funding level."
Sen. Shelby said, “Our bill includes $150 million for the Appalachian Highway Development System, which includes Corridor X. This significant level of funding will assist in the development of the Appalachian Highway System and Corridor X.”
Huntsville Southern Bypass
Sen. Shelby said, “Our bill provides $5 million for the first phase of the development of a bypass from I-565 to Memorial Parkway in Huntsville.”
Decatur Beltline Expansion
Sen. Shelby said, “This project would extend from U.S. 31 and end at U.S. Alt. 72. The roadway would expand from four lanes to six lanes with the construction of two additional lanes inside the existing roadway’s median. Our bill includes $2 million for this project.”
Interstate 565 Interchange at County Line Road - Madison, Alabama
Sen. Shelby said, “Our bill includes $1 million for the completion of the interchange at I-565 and County Line Road in Madison.”
Senator Shelby said, "I am pleased that the bill includes my provision to designate Corridor X between Tupelo, Mississippi, and Birmingham, Alabama as future Interstate Route I-22. The Interstate highway will benefit the region in its efforts to promote economic development."
Scenic Overlook and Pedestrian/Bicycle Trail - Grant, Alabama
Sen. Shelby said, “Our bill provides $25,000 for the development of a scenic overlook and trails for pedestrians and bicycles in Grant, Alabama.”
Huntsville Airport Intermodal Facility
Sen. Shelby said, "Our legislation provided Huntsville's Airport Intermodal Facility with the $3.5 million needed to complete construction. The Intermodal Facility is designed to provide a modern operations center for Huntsville's transit service."
Huntsville Airport Air Traffic Control Facilities
Sen. Shelby said, “Our bill provides $8 million for replacement facilities for the air traffic control system at the Huntsville Airport.”
Russell Cave National Monument Road - Jackson County, Alabama
Sen. Shelby said, “Our bill includes $500,000 for repairs and maintenance of the access road to Russell Cave National Monument. These funds will provide easier and safer access to this important monument.”
Statewide Bus Funding
The bill allocates $3.3 million to the Alabama Department of Transportation to distribute to local transit systems in cities and counties throughout the state to replace, upgrade, or expand transit vehicle fleets. Sen. Shelby said, “I am pleased we are able to include funding to assist the State Department of Transportation in meeting public transportation needs, replacing vehicles, and expanding service in our urban and rural communities.”
