U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL) made the following statement expressing his opposition to the Hagel-Martinez Immigration package:

“I believe this bill asks us to turn a blind eye to those who have broken the law. It rewards illegal immigrants by granting them amnesty and allowing them to cut in line ahead of millions of people who have followed the law and waited patiently in their home countries. I believe this bill sends the wrong message and it is nothing more than a repeat of the past -- which was a failed attempt to reform our broken immigration system by providing amnesty to illegal immigrants. When we look back on this bill 20 years from now, I believe we will conclude that this effort only emboldened those coming to the United States illegally.”

“In short, we will never be successful in our efforts to eliminate illegal immigration as long as Congress continues to pass legislation that rewards it.”
