U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL) today commented on the announcement that ThyssenKrupp AG, one of the world’s largest steel producers, will locate a $2.9 billion carbon steel and stainless steel manufacturing and processing facility in north Mobile County.
“This is great news for our state,” said Senator Shelby. “Alabama offers a tremendous workforce and Mobile County is an ideal site for this project. Mobile offers proximity to a deepwater seaport, an airport, and has significant space available for expansion. Not only will ThyssenKrupp AG employ over 2,700 people when it is fully operational, but it will bring 29,000 jobs to Alabama during the construction of its new state-of-the-art steel manufacturing and processing facility. As we have witnessed with Alabama’s expanding automotive industry, ThyssenKrupp’s new steel production will also establish many second-tier suppliers which could yield between 38,000 and 52,000 additional jobs over the next 20 years. This new facility will bring high-paying jobs to the area and continue economic growth along the Gulf Coast.”
