SHELBY STATEMENT ON END OF MAJOR COMBAT OPERATIONS IN IRAQ

U.S. Senator Richard C. Shelby (R-Ala) responds to President Bush’s speech stating that major combat operations in Iraq are over:

“Tonight, President Bush stated that major combat operations have ended in Iraq. In a very short time, our military was able to remove the regime of Saddam Hussein and liberate the people of Iraq.”

“With minimal civilian casualties, our military went into Iraq and swiftly and successfully completed their mission.”

“Saddam Hussein and his regime posed an immediate danger to the United States and our allies, and President Bush took the necessary steps to protect the American people. Had we continued to wait, Saddam Hussein may have developed nuclear capabilities.”

“My gratitude and appreciation goes out to the troops and our President for a job well done.”

“Although many troops will remain in Iraq to assist with the rebuilding of the country, I am confident their presence will play a crucial role in helping the Iraqi people adjust to life in a free society.”
