U.S. Senator Richard C. Shelby (R-AL) commented on President Bush's State of the Union address before Congress:

Senator Shelby said, “I am encouraged by the ambitious agenda President Bush set forth tonight on domestic and foreign policy issues. Americans have been challenged over the last year – experiencing war and economic hardship – and the vision the President outlined tonight will serve as an important roadmap for the year ahead.”

“I am pleased that our economy is beginning to see signs of improvement. I believe that is a result of the important tax cuts proposed by the President and enacted by Congress. I support the continued leadership of the President in expanding economic and job opportunities for all Americans.”

“Most importantly, I share President Bush's commitment to our national security. The President, along with Congress, has worked to ensure that our country remains vigilant against terrorism at home and abroad. I believe that the President’s strong policies have helped our country respond to the atrocities of September 11, 2001 and prepare for future threats.”

“This past year was filled with a number of victories - including the toppling of the Saddam Hussein regime in Iraq and the capture of the rogue tyrant. However, we must not become complacent. The war on terror continues, and I applaud the President's commitment to ensuring a safe homeland.”

“I look forward to working with President Bush and my colleagues in Congress to ensure that our homeland is secure and our economy is strong so that Americans can continue to prosper,” Shelby concluded.
