Shelby: Senate Passes First FY2020 Appropriations Minibus, Contains Funding for Alabama Priorities

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today commended the Senate’s passage of the Senate substitute to H.R. 3055, a package of Fiscal Year 2020 (FY2020) domestic spending bills which includes measures for the Appropriations Subcommittees on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies; Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies; Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies; and Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies.  This package contains various provisions impacting the state of Alabama.

“Today’s passage of this appropriations package will allow for funding of important priorities for the state of Alabama and our nation,” said Senator Shelby.  “This package prioritizes significant resources for the American people – whether it is improving our infrastructure and housing industry, ensuring our state’s role as a leader in space exploration, or supporting our farmers and rural communities.  I am proud we were able to pass this measure, allowing the Senate the opportunity to now move to our robust defense package and fund our military.”

The package, which passed by a vote of 84-9, provides support for various priorities within the Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Housing and Urban Development, Interior, Justice, and Transportation, as well as the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.  All four of the appropriations bills included in the package were passed by the full Senate Appropriations Committee with unanimous support.  Detailed information on each of the bills is located here.

The FY2020 Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies (CJS) funding bill will provide for investments to support law enforcement, economic prosperity, scientific research, space exploration, and other national priorities.  The FY2020 Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies funding bill supports U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) agriculture, rural development, conservation programs, and food and drug safety.  The FY2020 Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies measure contains funding for the U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Forest Service, Environmental Protection Agency, Indian Health Service, and other agencies.  The FY2020 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies funding bill will allow for resources to improve transportation infrastructure development, housing assistance, and community development.
