WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), senior member of the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, today voted to confirm Jelena McWilliams to be Chair of the Board of Directors of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.
“Jelena McWilliams is an exceptional choice to lead the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation,” said Senator Shelby. “Her vast knowledge and experience with banking issues will empower her to excel in this role. I am confident that with her leadership, the FDIC will appropriately regulate state chartered banks and provide a voice of reason on interagency rulemaking efforts.”
Jelena McWilliams currently serves as the chief legal officer, corporate secretary, and executive vice president of Fifth Third Bancorp. Prior to her current role, Ms. McWilliams worked for the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs. Most recently, she served as chief counsel and deputy staff director for Senator Shelby during his time as chairman of the Banking Committee.
Prior to serving on the Banking Committee, McWilliams also served as assistant chief counsel to the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship. Before her time on Capitol Hill, Ms. McWilliams worked as an attorney at the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, along with practicing at two other law firms. She holds a B.A. and a J.D. from the University of California, Berkley.
