Enterprise Native Completes Capitol Hill Internship

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) today announced that Brooks Payne of Enterprise, Alabama, has completed an internship this month in his Washington office.

During Payne’s time in Senator Shelby’s Capitol Hill office, he carried out a multitude of congressional tasks.  Payne collected pertinent information for legislative staffers at briefings and hearings on topics ranging from appropriations to foreign affairs.  Payne also compiled news clippings on current events for the Senator and his staff alongside Senator Shelby’s press shop.  Additionally, Payne led tours of the U.S. Capitol for constituents, as well as served the citizens of Alabama with various requests.

“Brooks Payne was a huge help to my office and the people of Alabama during his time as an intern here in Washington,” said Senator Shelby.  “Participating in the Congressional Internship Program gives students interested in government and public service a unique opportunity to experience the day-to-day workings of Capitol Hill while learning about our nation’s legislative process.  I am grateful for Brooks’s hard work and know he has a bright future ahead of him.”

Payne is the son of Audrey and Eric Payne of Enterprise, Alabama.  This August, he will begin his junior year at the University of Alabama where he is majoring in communication studies with a minor in political science.  As an elected Student Government Association Vice President and former Senator, Payne has learned about the fundamentals of leadership and teamwork.  He plans on utilizing the skills he has developed from his experiences both in school and from Senator Shelby’s office as he continues his undergraduate education.

“Being an intern for Senator Shelby and his staff has been both an honor and an incredible experience that I am certain will hold substantial value in the years to come,” said Brooks Payne.  “Growing up in Alabama, I have always looked up to Senator Shelby.  Having the ability to work for him seems almost too good to be true.  I have had a great experience gaining knowledge from the staff and my fellow colleagues, and I have enjoyed all that Capitol Hill has to offer.  Words can’t describe how appreciative I am of this opportunity and the caliber of people I have been surrounded by.  I plan on carrying all I have learned into the next chapter of life.”

Senator Shelby’s Congressional Internship Program is open to students who exhibit an interest in government and public service.
