WASHINGTON, DC -- U. S. Senator Richard C. Shelby (R-AL), a member of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, issued the following statement after the groundbreaking of Phase II of the Von Braun Complex at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville:

Senator Shelby said, “I am pleased that today’s groundbreaking ceremony marks the beginning of the construction for Phase II of the Von Braun Complex. Upon the completion of this building, the Missile Defense Agency will be able to consolidate personnel in a state-of-the-art facility. By investing in the growth and improvement of Redstone Arsenal, we continue to renew our commitment to national security and to the men and women who serve our country.”

This new building will be the home of the Missile Defense Agency (MDA). Senator Shelby was instrumental in securing more than $38 million in the fiscal year 2004 and fiscal year 2005 appropriations bills for the construction of Phase II of the Von Braun Complex.

The construction of this building is scheduled to be finished in May 2007 and upon its completion will have office space for approximately 950 people. More specifically, the offices of the Missile Defense Agency’s Ground-based Midcourse Defense – Joint Program Office (GMD-JPO), the Missile Defense Data Center (MDDC), the Optical Discrimination Analysis Offices (ODA), as well as direct support contractor personnel will be housed there. This five-story building will be 234,000 square feet and will be located next to Phase I of the Von Braun Complex, which houses the Space and Missile Defense Command.
