SHELBY ANNOUNCES GRANT FOR UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA

$4.95 Million Grant Will Establish Campus Transit System

U. S. Sen. Richard C. Shelby (R-Ala.), member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced a $4.95 million grant for the University of South Alabama.

Sen. Shelby said, "I am pleased to announce these funds for the University of South Alabama. This grant will provide for the establishment of a campus transit system for students, employees and the general public. The transit system will extend services within the University’s main campus area and will link to the Mobile Transit Authority to provide improved transit services to the West Mobile area."

The grant represents funds secured by Senator Shelby in the Transportation Appropriations bills for Fiscal Year 2001 and 2002. The grant will fund the purchase of 10 shuttle bus vehicles, one handicapped shuttle vehicle, a support vehicle, computer hardware and software, bus stop shelters, route and parking signs, and traffic control devices. The funds will also provide for dedicated limited use bus only roadways on campus, a bus storage and maintenance facility, shop equipment, and design/engineering costs associated with the project.
