SEN. SHELBY ANNOUNCES ALABAMA FUNDING

Conference Committee Approves Funding for University of South Alabama's Birth Defects Monitoring Program

U. S. Sen. Richard C. Shelby (R-Ala.) announced today that a conference committee has approved his request for funding in the Foreign Operations Appropriations Bill for Fiscal Year 2002. Included in the bill is the University of South Alabama's Birth Defects Monitoring Program. This program will now be eligible for funding by the United States Agency for International Development.

Sen. Shelby said, "I am very pleased that the Conference Committee has recognized the importance of this program and has agreed to continue funding for the work of the Birth Defects Monitoring Program at the University of South Alabama. The program will continue its studies of environmental causes of birth defects. In addition to the important research conducted at this facility, the facility employs numerous Mobile-area residents."
