U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala) today announced that the application period for the fiscal year 2009 Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) Program will open on Monday, March 3, 2008, and will close on Friday, April 4, 2008. The grant program is offered through U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Grants and Training.
“It is critical that our first responders receive the necessary training and are equipped with the tools they need to protect our citizens,” said Shelby. “The Assistance to Firefighters Grants program helps firefighters across Alabama continue efforts to ensure the safety of our communities. I encourage fire departments that seek federal assistance to complete an application to the Assistance to Firefighters Grants program before the deadline of April 4, 2008.”
The AFG program funds projects to purchase new equipment, improve firefighter health and safety programs, and improve the effectiveness of firefighting and emergency response operations. The AFG Program assists rural, urban, and suburban fire departments throughout the United States. Non fire-based EMS organizations may also apply for grants.
