SHELBY ENCOURAGED BY QUICK ACTION ON ADDITIONAL EMERGENCY RELIEF PACKAGE

WASHINGTON, D. C. -- U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL) today issued the following statement upon Congress’ approval of a $51.8 billion emergency relief package in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina:

“The President’s decision to request an additional $51.8 billion for emergency relief efforts is critical as the recovery continues and early stages of rebuilding begin following Hurricane Katrina. While we have yet to fully appreciate the true loss and cost associated with this catastrophe, I am pleased that Congress recognized that swift action on emergency aid is essential.”

“Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi were hit hard by this hurricane, and I anticipate that Congress will consider another emergency relief package that will meet the specific needs of the affected areas in these states. I plan to work closely with my Senate colleagues to craft legislation that ensures communities across Alabama and the Gulf Coast have the resources and support to recover and rebuild following this devastating storm.”
