Shelby Gains Two Key Subcommittees and Expands Chairmanship

U. S. Sen. Richard C. Shelby (R-Ala.) announced today that he has gained two new subcommittees on the Senate Appropriations Committee and has expanded the subcommittee he formerly chaired. Senator Shelby is now the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Transportation, Treasury and General Government. This new subcommittee is a result of the merging of the Subcommittee on Transportation and the Subcommittee on Treasury and General Government.

Senator Shelby has been assigned to two new subcommittees - the Subcommittee on Homeland Security and the Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services (HHS), and Education. The Subcommittee on Homeland Security will oversee and allocate federal funds for the new Department of Homeland Security, including the Transportation Security Administration, the Coast Guard, the Office of Emergency Preparedness, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the Immigration and Naturalization Service.
Sen. Shelby said, “I’m pleased to be a member of the Subcommittee on Homeland Security. As the Department of Homeland Security develops, it is important that we are able to adequately fund the programs the department will undertake, including the establishment of an all-inclusive intelligence gathering entity. And as a new member of the Labor, HHS, Education subcommittee, I will have more influence over funding decisions made within these federal agencies.”

In total, Senator Shelby is now a member of the following Appropriations Subcommittees:
• Subcommittee on Transportation, Treasury and General Government, Chairman
• Subcommittee on Homeland Security
• Subcommittee on Defense
• Subcommittee on Foreign Operations
• Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs, Housing and Urban Development, and Independent Agencies
• Subcommittee on Labor, HHS, and Education
