Shelby Announces Lee County Nominees to United States Service Academies

WASHINGTON, D. C. – Wednesday, February 3, 2016 – U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) today applauded Lee County students that he has nominated to the United States service academies.  This year Senator Shelby nominated 35 students from across the state of Alabama.  The service academies include the U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Military Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

“I am proud to nominate these distinguished students to the United States service academies,” said Senator Shelby.  “These young men are among the best and brightest in Alabama as evidenced by their excellent performance both inside and outside the classroom.  It is my honor to recommend them, and I wish them the best of luck in all their future endeavors.  I am confident that they will go on to achieve great things.”

In order to be considered for nomination, applicants must be residents of Alabama and complete the required ACT or SAT exams.  They must also provide letters of recommendation, a school transcript, a completed medical examination, and a completed application form found on Senator Shelby’s website.

The following Lee County students have been nominated:

  • Calvin Downs, son of David and Michelle Downs of Auburn, Alabama, and a student at Lee-Scott Academy, was nominated to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy.
  • Joseph Farrow, son of Charles and Julia Farrow of Auburn, Alabama, and a student at Auburn High School, was nominated to attend the U.S. Naval Academy.

Although Senator Shelby nominated these students, the academy to which they were nominated will make the final admission decision.
