U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), ranking member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, and Science, today announced that the National Science Foundation will award $392,246 to the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) for research on the relationships between lightning events and clouds. Senator Shelby was instrumental in securing this funding.
“UAH is a premier research facility for meteorology,” said Shelby. “Using satellites, scientists at UAH will use this funding to continue research to determine why some storms produce more lightning than others. The findings from this study will lead to an improved understanding of the interrelationships between lightning, cloud microphysics and satellite observations of growing cumulus clouds.”
