U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), ranking member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice and Science, today announced that the Department of Justice will award $34,113 to the Alabama Attorney General’s Office for the new State Victim Assistance Academies (SVAA). This grant is awarded through the FY 2008 State Victim Assistance Academy Initiative, which aims to assist states in establishing their own SVAA that will offer training to personnel who routinely interact with victims of crimes.
“It is terrible to be a victim of a crime and it is critical that those who interact with victims are properly trained to provide the necessary assistance and advocacy,” said Shelby. “The Alabama Attorney General, in collaboration with Troy University, will use this important grant to develop strategies for implementing Alabama’s new SVAA.”
