U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), ranking member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice and Science, today announced that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has awarded $890,000 to the University of South Alabama (USA). USA will use this funding to support the Alabama Oyster Reef and Fisheries Habitat Enhancement Program.
“The oyster industry is a staple of Alabama’s coastal economy and its impact is felt far beyond our state’s shores,” said Shelby. “This funding will be used to develop a strategy aimed at ensuring a strong oyster-based fishery habitat in the Gulf of Mexico.”
