SHELBY ANNOUNCES FUNDING APPROVAL FOR UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA'S BIRTH DEFECTS MONITORING PROGRAM

U. S. Sen. Richard C. Shelby (R-Ala.) announced today that the Senate Appropriations Committee has approved funding for the Foreign Operations Appropriations Bill for Fiscal Year 2002. Included in the bill is approval of funding, secured by Sen. Shelby, for the University of South Alabama's Birth Defects Monitoring Program.

Sen. Shelby said, "I am very pleased that the Committee has once again recognized the important merits of this program and has agreed to continue funding for the work of the Birth Defects Monitoring Program at the University of South Alabama. The program will continue its studies of environmental causes of birth defects. In addition to the important research conducted at this facility, the facility employs numerous Mobile-area residents."
