Shelby Announces Madison County Nominees to United States Service Academies

WASHINGTON, D. C. – Wednesday, February 3, 2016 – U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) today applauded Madison County students that he has nominated to the United States service academies.  This year Senator Shelby nominated 35 students from across the state of Alabama.  The service academies include the U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Military Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

“I am proud to nominate these distinguished students to the United States service academies,” said Senator Shelby.  “These young men and women are among the best and brightest in Alabama as evidenced by their excellent performance both inside and outside the classroom.  It is my honor to recommend them, and I wish them the best of luck in all their future endeavors.  I am confident that they will go on to achieve great things.”

In order to be considered for nomination, applicants must be residents of Alabama and complete the required ACT or SAT exams.  They must also provide letters of recommendation, a school transcript, a completed medical examination, and a completed application form found on Senator Shelby’s website.

The following Madison County students have been nominated:

  • Robert Craven, son of William and Lisa Craven of Huntsville, Alabama, and a student at Grissom High School, was nominated to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy.
  • Lani Davis, daughter of William and Yuenyuen Davis of Huntsville, Alabama, and a student at Grissom High School, was nominated to attend the U.S. Naval Academy.
  • Sampson Downard, son of James and Nancy Downard of New Market, Alabama, and a student at Buckhorn High School, was nominated to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy.
  • Connor Howard, son of Horace and Linda Howard of Brownsboro, Alabama, and a student at Huntsville High School, was nominated to attend the U.S. Military Academy.
  • Brendan Huhlein, son of Bradley and Kathie Huhlein of Huntsville, Alabama, and a student at St. John Paul III Catholic High School, was nominated to attend the U.S. Military Academy.
  • Lauren Johnson, daughter of Jeffery and Lisa Johnson of Owens Cross Roads, Alabama, and a student at Huntsville High School, was nominated to attend the U.S. Military Academy.
  • Colton Parton, son of Jerry and Nicole Parton of Gurley, Alabama, and a student at Madison County High School, was nominated to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy.
  • Andrew Reville, son of Albert and Kimberly Reville of Toney, Alabama, and a student at Excalibur Christian School, was nominated to attend the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
  • Nathan Shelton, son of Jason and Rebecca Shelton of Madison, Alabama, and a student at Providence Classical School, was nominated to attend the U.S. Military Academy.
  • Joshua Valentin, son of Jose and Elaine Valentin of Madison, Alabama, and a student at Bob Jones High School, was nominated to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Although Senator Shelby nominated these students, the academy to which they were nominated will make the final admission decision.
