SEN. SHELBY ANNOUNCES CONFERENCE COMMITTEE APPROVAL FOR MONTGOMERY AND SOUTHEAST ALABAMA DEFENSE PROGRAMS

U. S. Sen. Richard C. Shelby (R-Ala.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced today the approval of Fiscal Year 2002 Conference Report funding for Montgomery and Southeast Alabama defense programs.

Sen. Shelby said, "I am very pleased that the Conference Committee approved funding for these important defense programs. They are critical to the stability of our nation’s military infrastructure and readiness. Today’s approval demonstrates our commitment to national security."

JAVELIN MISSILES

Sen. Shelby said, "The Conference Committee appropriated $415.6 million to procure Javelin missiles for both the Army and Marine Corp in fiscal year 2002 and $3 million for research, development, test and evaluation. Javelin missiles give our ground forces a critical capability and are produced at the Lockheed Martin facility in Troy."

LONGBOW HELLFIRE

Sen. Shelby said, "The Conference also included $241.8 million for the procurement of Longbow Hellfire missiles. These missiles help to maintain our Army Aviators as the most effective warriors in the sky and are also produced at the Lockheed Martin facility in Troy."

JOINT AIR-TO-SURFACE STANDOFF MISSILE (JASSM)

Sen. Shelby said, "The Conference included $45 million for procurement and $79.2 million for research, development, test and evaluation for the Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile (JASSM). This precision air-to-ground missile will be used for the Air Force and Navy to destroy high-value, well-defended targets. It is being produced at the Lockheed Martin facility in Troy."

AH-64D APACHE LONGBOW

Sen. Shelby said, "The Conference included $890.9 million for procurement of the Apache Longbow helicopters. This helicopter is vital to the Army and Wiregrass area."

TH-67 TRAINING HELICOPTERS

Sen. Shelby said, "The Conference included $25 million for procurement of 24 TH-67 training helicopters. These helicopters will be used at Fort Rucker to train our next generation of Army aviators."

UH-60 BLACKHAWKS

Sen. Shelby said, "The Conference included $174.5 million for procurement of 12 UH-60 Blackhawks. The helicopter is vital to the Army and Wiregrass area."

KIOWA WARRIOR

Sen. Shelby said, "The Conference included $42.6 million for procurement of Kiowa Warrior Helicopters. This helicopter allows our Army aviators to gather valuable intelligence on the battlefield and to support attack operations. This helicopter is vital to the Army and the Wiregrass area."
