Shelby Announces Jackson, Madison, Marshall, and Morgan County Nominees to U.S. Service Academies

WASHINGTON, D. C. – Friday, January 30, 2015 – U. S. Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) today applauded Jackson, Madison, Marshall, and Morgan County students that he has nominated to the United States Service Academies.  This year Senator Shelby nominated 33 students from across the state of Alabama.  The service academies include the U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Military Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

“I am proud to announce that these outstanding students have been selected as my nominees to the United States service academies,” said Shelby.  “These young men and women are among the best and the brightest in Alabama as evidenced by their exemplary performance both inside and outside the classroom.  It is my honor to recommend them, and I wish them the best of luck in all of their future endeavors.”

In order to be considered for nomination, applicants must be residents of Alabama and complete the required ACT or SAT exams.  They must also provide letters of recommendation, a school transcript, a completed medical examination, and a completed application form found on Senator Shelby’s website.

The following North Alabama students have been nominated:

  • Stephen Delany, son of Vincent and Maria Delany of Woodville, Alabama, and a student at Pope John Paul II Catholic High School, was nominated to attend the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
  • Alexander Reville, son of Albert and Kimberly Reville, Jr. of Toney, Alabama, and a student at Texas A&M Maritime Academy, was nominated to attend the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
  • Seth Bailer, son of Douglas and Misty Bailer of Section, Alabama, and a student at Section High School, was nominated to attend the U.S. Military Academy.
  • Matthew Ellow, son of Charles and Kathleen Bestor of Lacey’s Spring, Alabama, and a student at A.P. Brewer High School, was nominated to attend the U.S. Military Academy.
  • Christopher Tran, son of Diem and Lenguyen Tran of Huntsville, Alabama, and a student at Pope John Paul II Catholic High School, was nominated to attend the U.S. Military Academy.
  • Laura Ayers, daughter of Charles and Greta Ayers, Jr. of Grant, Alabama, and a student at Kate Duncan Smith DAR High School, was nominated to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy.
  • Bradley Evans, son of David and Carol Evans of Huntsville, Alabama, and a student at Mississippi State University, was nominated to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy.
  • Rebecca Wagner, daughter of Glen and Cindy Wagner of Huntsville, Alabama, and a student at Virgil I. Grissom High School, was nominated to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy.
  • David Williams, III, son of David and Kelly Williams, Jr. of Madison, Alabama, and a student at James Clemens High School, was nominated to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy.
  • Trevor Givens, son of Ricky and Krista Givens of Decatur, Alabama, and a student at Decatur High School, was nominated to attend the U.S. Naval Academy.
  • Jacob Vehrs, son of Jason and Donna Vehrs of Decatur, Alabama, and a student at Priceville High School, was nominated to attend the U.S. Naval Academy.

Although Senator Shelby nominated these students, the academy to which they were nominated will make the final admission decision.
