U.S. Senator Richard C. Shelby (R-AL) today commented on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals decision that declared the Pledge of Allegiance unconstitutional:
"I strongly disapprove of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals decision today regarding the constitutionality of the Pledge of Allegiance. This outrageous decision ignores the basic principles and values of our nation's founding and is an overreaching demonstration of judicial activism. Our nation was founded upon a basic belief and faith in God as evidenced by the 'so help me God' repeated by judges and American presidents sworn into office and the 'In God We Trust' on our currency. I am pleased that the Senate acted quickly to condemn this decision and look forward to reaffirming the inclusion of 'under God' in our nation's Pledge of Allegiance."
The U.S. Senate voted 99 - 0 to denounce the decision of the three judge panel.
