Remains Leading Republican on Senate Appropriations Committee & Defense Panel
WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) today announced his committee assignments for the 117th Congress, which include the Senate Committee on Appropriations; the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs; the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works; and the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration. He will continue to serve as the leading Republican on the Appropriations Committee in the position of vice chairman. He will also serve as vice chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense.
“My committee assignments for the next Congress will bolster my work on behalf of the state of Alabama and the nation,” said Senator Shelby. “It is an honor to continue to lead my Republican colleagues on the Senate Appropriations Committee. Chairman Leahy and I have a long-standing relationship built on trust and fairness, and I look forward to continuing our work to fund our national priorities in a bipartisan manner. Furthermore, my position on the defense appropriations subcommittee will enable my continued efforts to strengthen the security of our nation.
“I also look forward to my work on Banking, Environment and Public Works, and Rules to advance legislation that will improve the lives of all Americans.”
Senator Shelby served as chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations and its subcommittee on defense during a portion of the 115th Congress and the entirety of the 116th Congress. He also served as vice chairman of the Appropriations Committee for the 113th Congress.
As the previous chairman of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee and the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration, Senator Shelby remains a senior member on each of the committees. Notably, he is the longest-serving member in history on the Senate Banking Committee.
